After Pearl Harbor, a group of young men join the Marines. They train hard but are relegated to mop up roles for several years. They grow into a close-knit group and are finally given their chance during the invasion of Saipan. Despite the title, this film is light on combat. What it does very well is tell the story of the young men, their bonds as soldiers and the women who love them. Starring Van Heflin, Aldo Ray, Mona Freeman, Nancy Olson, James Whitmore, Tab Hunter and Dorothy Malone. Directed by Raoul Walsh.
