THE BLACK SCORPION (1957)

In “The Black Scorpion” (1957), a massive earthquake and volcanic eruption draws a geologist to a small Mexican town where other disasters and strange things begin to happen. As the geologist investigates further, he uncovers a horrifying secret lurking beneath the earth’s surface, a terrifying nest of giant prehistoric scorpions. The monstrous scorpions wreak havoc on the local villages and towns while the geologist works to destroy the monsters.

The Black Scorpion had outstanding special effects for its time including stop-motion animation. It is set against an interesting backdrop of Mexican landscapes and explores themes of human resilience and cooperation in the face of extraordinary challenges. The film is also typical of 1950s science fiction where monster insects and other fantastic creatures arise to take revenge on humanity after natural or man-made disasters. Starring Richard Denning, Mara Corday and Carlos Rivas. Directed by Edward Ludwig.
