Marcus Vinicius is a typical Roman general serving the emperor Nero until he falls in love with Lygia, a hostage who has adopted Christianity. He begins to question the tyranny of Rome as he comes to understand Lygia and her faith. As Nero begins to persecute the Christians, Lygia and her protector Ursus face death in the arena. Based on the 1895 historical novel by Henryk Sienkiewicz, the film features epic scenes of Rome utilizing thousands of extras. The film was a huge box office success and was nominated for eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Starring Robert Taylor, Deborah Kerr, Leo Genn, and Peter Ustinov. Directed by Mervyn LeRoy and Anthony Mann.
