A BRIDGE TOO FAR (1977)

“A Bridge Too Far” chronicles the story of Operation Market Garden. As the Allied advance in Europe stalled a few months after D-Day, General Bernard Montgomery came up with a bold plan to capture a bridgehead across the Rhine and end the war in 1944. The complex plan involved dropping three airborne divisions along a highway in Holland with the expectation they would capture a series of strategic bridges along the 60+ mile battle zone. Meanwhile, a British armored and infantry column would race up the highway to relieve the surrounded paratroopers. They were expected to do so in only 2 days. The plan went awry from the start due to shortages of transport aircraft, the weather and stiffer than expected German resistance.

Based on the book by Cornelius Ryan, A Bridge Too Far features an ensemble international cast. Starring Sean Connery, Ryan O’Neal, Michael Caine, Laurence Olivier, Dirk Bogarde, James Caan, Robert Redford, Gene Hackman, Anthony Hopkins, Hardy Kruger and Elliot Gould. Directed by Richard Attenborough.
