KISS OF DEATH (1947)

In Kiss of Death (1947), Nick Bianco is a career criminal who becomes caught in a web of crime and betrayal. Arrested for robbery and facing a long sentence, Nick is offered the opportunity to testify against the other thieves. His lawyer promises him that if he keeps quiet, his family will be taken care of, and he will soon be paroled. Several years into his sentence, he learns that his wife has committed suicide due to lack of money and he begins to reconsider the choice he made. Richard Widmark made his big screen debut in this noir classic in a role that earned him a Best Supporting Actor nomination but seems a bit over the top today. 1995 remake stars David Caruso, Samuel L. Jackson and Nicholas Cage. Starring Victor Mature, Brian Donlevy, Colleen Gray, Richard Widmark, Taylor Holmes and Karl Malden. Directed by Henry Hathaway.
