THE MUMMY (1932)

In The Mummy (1932), an archeological expedition unearths a 3700-year-old mummy along with a cursed box. The first person to open the box goes mad as the mummy comes to life and walks off with the contents of the box – an ancient scroll. Ten years later, a mysterious Egyptian leads another expedition to the tomb of an ancient princess. The Egyptian turns out to be Imhotep, an ancient priest set on bringing the princess back to life. He plans to do so by reincarnating her soul into the body of Helen Grosvenor who bears an eerie resemblance to the princess.

The Mummy was the first film in what became an enduring franchise for Universal Pictures and solidified Boris Karloff’s status as a horror icon. While later remakes of The Mummy portray Imhotep as a supernatural and super powerful being set on world conquest, here he is portrayed as a romantic obsessed with bringing his lover back to life. Starring Boris Karloff, Zita Johann, David Manners and Arthur Byron. Directed by Karl Freund.
